I remember after seeing this and the trailer that soon follow, I got really excited and anxious! I don't think I've ever hyped a movie up as much as I have with this.

Best Part: It lived up to it.

Except Jon didn't immediately think RDJ could do it--it was RDJ's enthusiasm and hope that he could pull it off that got him this role. He practically cast himself.

While that was definitely a factor, I wouldn't say it was the entire reason for it's success. And that wouldn't explain Avatar coming along and beating it only a year and  a half later. I mean, most people expected TDK's gross to not be passed(domestically at any rate) for probably about 10 years or so.
