Of course not ... normal pans should be fine up until a certain speed.

Oh dear. Was planning to get a 550d :( But I work with visual effects and compositing, and I can't do anything on footage like that. I have the Rollingshutter plug-in by the Foundry....but it can only do so much....sigh, DSLRs...so pretty yet so problematic for me.

While it's true rolling shutter is bad on DSLRs, it's also apparent on all other CMOS-based cameras - and virtually all of the new cameras are CMOS based, even a RED ONE.

Also, don't overestimate how often you will have to do whip pans at 320mm ... virtually never. I don't say it doesn't matter, but it doesn't matter as much as you probably think it does. We are doing VFX stuff with these cameras all the time. Even Video Copilot does, and that guy really knows best.

like stated before the rolling shutter is reduced by a considerable amount when dropped down to the 720p setting. additionally, the fact that this video was taken at 320mm has a lot to do with it, it is zoomed in A LOT. when under 200mm, this problem is almost unnoticeable

Almost unnoticeable is not true, you'll also see it quite clearly with fast pans when at a wide angle - but it's true, it's worse at a long focal length. 720p might be less sensitive for it, but it produces the nasties aliasing of any videos ... check the original review of the T2i/550D on my blog for some details about the aliasing

It's the same camera, they call it Rebel T2i in US and 550D in Europe.

Even in an action movie though who pans like that? Seems like a problem very easy to work around. I doubt it's as pronounced for a person or car passing by? Maybe I'm worng but this doesn't seem like the Huge problem I always hear being discussed...?

My post was meant to be sarcastic. While rolling shutter issues can be problematic, it's actually fairly rare to come across them, and pretty easy to work around. Yet, there are about three dozen of these videos on the web like this showing their "flaw", as if people actually shot footage like this.

Really? What are you filming where you have to do whip pans so often?

This is why I will never buy one of these cameras, especially considering the majority of the time I use my camera I shoot whip pans back and forth over and over.

It's so bad on dSLR's because the on-board processor is far inferior to professional filming camera's (for film processing.) In case you wanted to avoid this effect the most, buy one of the sony semi-pro camcorders.
