  • I'm still a beginner and have been learning to play since 5 days now (teaching myself) and have a few chords down that I strum. When do you think I should start concentrating on the fingerpicking technique?

  • I see no need to wait :) Whenever you feel it's right, go ahead. I didn't get it right away, but it didn't stop me from trying... and every little bit of experience helps in the end!

  • Thanks for your reply! I've been playing the ref (not sure if I say that right) of the Wonderful tonight tutorial you have up. I guess that involves fingerpicking but I usually end up touching the string above the one I'm supposed to pick. I suppose I have to just practice, practice and practice. Also when do I use the thumb to pick? I want to thank you again for taking time out to post such excellent videos.

  • It's called a "riff" :)

As to using the thumb, I usually use it for the lower three bass strings...

  • oh ty dude

  • You bet! :)

  • @MRxMADxMONKEY ,

Yes its possible, find Toy Caldwell, aka the Golden Thumb, of Marshall Tucker doing "Cant You See", its Amazing to watch.

His brother used his thumb also..... RIP Toy Caldwell......

  • Thanks for puting up the video it has helped me a LOT! I am just starting to play and playing is pretty hard but you make is seem easier then it really is.

  • nope! your an idiot.

  • Do you think you could cover hybrid picking?

  • youtube Thumbs Carlyle...he did his own thing ..logically one would think "thumb only" limiting...hence the idea of fingerpicking. Have you tried a thumbpick?...it frees up your index finger..as for what people call you, I cant help you there..but many great players use thumb/index. My take is that you might try many differing righthand techniques/attacks, expand your tonal pallet... its about organizing sounds.. so... utilize all tools

available? One drum.. a kit?...or horses for courses?

  • Is it possible to use /just/ your thumb, without having people tell you what an idiot you are for doing so? =/

I have a ton of trouble using a pick, and I can use my thumb and index finger decently, and... not so well with my thumb, index, and middle. But thumb alone I do good with.
