Update: kurwamac82 hipped me to the origins of this particular track:

"Please, don't write 'some obscure' fusion - these guys were the first to play fusion in Poland back at the beginning of the 80ies and gained quite a popularity. Check out other Polish bands e.g. String Connection and solo works from K. Scieranski - still the no. 1 bass player in Poland since the 80ies. I'm pleasantly surprised you, being an American, put that here, though :)"

From "Quasimodo," 1979. Lineup:

Janusz Grzywacz: piano, Rhodes, Arp Odyssey
Marek Stryszowski: vocals, alto and soprano sax
Pavel Scieranski: guitar
Krzysztof Scieranski: bass guitar
Miecyslaw Gorka: drumkit

  • My apologies--I couldn't find any English-language info on this stuff, but I'm aware of some of their contemporaries (Michal Urbaniak, Urszula Dudziak, Krzysztof Komeda--I guess he was a bit earlier). I'll put yr comment in the description.

  • I grew up musically by listening to this music. It was my first exposure to live jazz. I went to see these guys play in the Club Aquarium any time they were in Warsaw. With time I started to listen to Laboratorium's main influences, and went back to study more traditional Jazz forms as a guitar player and composer.
