This is a two-part tutorial on how to make a really nice-looking wallpaper using the GIMP, which you can download free of charge from http://www.gimp.org/ . You can download the wallpaper here in three different resolutions from http://tinyurl.com/3dr2yy .

YES I MESSED UP. Where I edit the levels to make the haze mask brighter, I /should/ have just inverted the layer instead. That's what I did for the first two. Inverting makes it look like a haze, whereas editing levels to brighten it makes it look like sparks. They're both nice, though. Anyway, I'll probably be redoing my 1280x1024 version to put that right.

The girl in this wallpaper is Sakagami Tomoyo, my favorite character from the most recent anime I've seen, Clannad. It's awesome so I definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Eclipse are fansubbing it with only two episodes left to be released as of now.

  • Do you know how to add backgrounds to anime pictures??

Like for example, I drew an anime girl on a blank white canvas, now i wanna add a background without drawing OVER her, how do i make one where it appears to be behind her?? i know you must use layers but how should the be set up?? ? The anime girl has already been coloured.

  • @AnoNeko100 Well, the easy way is to not draw on a white canvas. :P

It's not so easy to draw on the ugly checkerboard pattern, though, so your best bet is probably to create two layers, the lower one being completely white and the upper one being completely transparent. Then ignore the white layer and draw on the transparent one. Later, you can delete the white layer.

  • I like how you take the time to explain all of what you're doing by telling what tools and optiions are being used. Also how to get to them as well as what each tool does. Thank you very much this tutorial has been very useful.
