SINGAPORE - Residents at a Geylang Bahru Market And Food Centre were given a taste of the possible contest to expect in the new Moulmein-Kallang Group Representative Constituency (GRC) yesterday morning.

Members of the ward's incumbent People's Action Party (PAP) and their potential challengers from the National Solidarity Party (NSP) crossed paths at the market, where they exchanged brief pleasantries with each other.

Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim (picture) told reporters the PAP will seriously fight any opposition team fielded in Moulmein-Kallang GRC. Moulmein-Kallang has been carved out of the existing Jalan Besar GRC, which Dr Yaacob helms, for the coming General Election.

"We are confident ... we will be able to win the trust of the voters because we've been working for the last five years. We're not just parachuted all-of-a-sudden overnight ... I think our track record is open for scrutiny," said Dr Yaacob.

With him were incumbents Dr Lee Boon Yang and Ms Denise Phua, and new face Mr Edwin Tong. Mr Tong, a lawyer, said he had been understudying Dr Lee in Jalan Besar. Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew - whose current ward of Moulmein is in the new GRC - was also at the walkabout.

Among those in the NSP team were its prospective election candidates Mr Tony Tan and Ms Hazel Poa, both former Government scholars, and Ms Nor Lella Mardiiiah, who heads the party's Malay bureau. They were accompanied by other party members, including the party's treasurer, Mr Steve Chia.

"We are here today in this area to introduce our candidates ... We hope to bring competition to politics," said Mr Chia.

The Workers' Party had also expressed interest in contesting Moulmein-Kallang, leading to the possibility of a three-cornered fight.

On 28 Feb 2011, Singapore Top Socio-Political news website, Temasek Review had reported that "Given the many boundary changes which seem to favour the PAP, Singaporeans cannot help but to agree with the opposition parties that these unsubstantiated changes are mere gerrymandering in the ruling party's favour, to the detriment of one's sense of belonging to his constituency."
