Thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers are on the streets of cities across Jammu-Kashmir, including the capital, Srinagar. At least four people have been killed in clashes with police and hundreds wounded.

Businesses, shops and schools are closed in many places. The protests began when 40 hectares of land was given to a trust running a Hindu shrine.

The plan is to build accommodation for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who flock there every year. The protesters believe India plans to create a permanent settlement for Hindus in the Muslim-majority region.
