Tribute to my Cherokee grandmother and all my relations and ancestors. This is a version arranged by Robbie Robertson, voice is Rita Coolidge. The soundtrack, Music for The Native Americans, was used in Ted Turner's TBN 6 hour mini-series: The Native Americans.
We n' de ya ho, We n' de ya ho,
We n' de ya, We n' de ya Ho ho ho ho,
He ya ho, He ya ho, Ya ya ya

Translation - We n' de ya ho
Freely translated: "A we n'" (I am), "de" (of), "Yauh" --the-- (Great Spirit), "Ho" (it is so).
Written as: A we n' de Yauh ho (I am of the Great Spirit, Ho!).
This language stems from very ancient Cherokee

Translation by David Michael Wolfe who is an Eastern Virginia Cherokee and a cultural historian. Thanks to Maurizio Orlando for providing the translation.

  • I love this song! I have listened to it so many times! I had a great uncle by marriage who was cherokee, I just had the honor of my great aunt asking me to work on his family tree and find out more about his ancestors for her kids. I also discovered in the geneaology search that in my family, the man who started my family in the 1700s was adopted and that he was originally from an abenaki tribe in Canada!

  • Such a beautiful tribute to your Ancestors! Wa'do!
