The orchid is one of the fundamentals subject learned by the beginning ink painting student. Long, free arm motions are done for the leaves, while more controlled movements are needed for the flower and its center.

The orchid is one of the "Four Gentlemen" in the Chinese and Japanese ink painting tradition. Each "gentleman" has associated virtues and seasons.

While the orchid is easily learned, it is very difficult to create a well constructed, expressive and artistic painting.
