Dalai Lama Returns to Dharamsala Following U.S. Trip
2010-03-01 10:23

The Dalai Lama is back in India today after a recent trip to the U.S.

The Dalai Lama met with President Barack Obama at the White House.

The visit drew an angry reaction from China and risked further damage to strained Sino-U.S. ties.

Obama used his first presidential meeting with the Dalai Lama to press Beijing to preserve Tibetan identity and respect human rights.

Large numbers of Tibetans waited outside India's Kangra airport to give a grand welcome to their spiritual leader.

"The historic meeting with Obama is a milestone towards achieving global peace So we are all here to celebrate basically to offer or to honor our leader with the deepest and the greatest respect that we have here for him."

Tibetans performed the traditional Opera dance for the Dali Lama at the airport.

Obama encouraged China and the Dalai Lama's envoys to keep up efforts to resolve their differences through negotiations.
