ucu strike 24th March 2011 Display

On 24th March Stanmore College UCU members staged a one day strike as a protest against the governments plans for major cuts in the value of this pension scheme and increased employee contributions.
The education sector is undergoing rapid changes, including the ending of the Education Maintenance Allowance. This will make it harder for students from poorer families to stay on in school or college post-16 and to have a chance of going to university. From 2012 university students face much higher tuition fees. It looks as if few universities are going to fix fees around £6000 per year. Several universities are planning to charge the maximum of £9000 or near to that sum.
UCU, the University and College Union, has campaigned with NUS against these higher fees. The demonstration on 10th November last year showed how strongly many students are opposed to fee increases. Opposition to Government spending cuts and austerity measures is growing. Students and education workers need to work together to resist cuts and privatisation in our universities and colleges.
On Saturday 26th March the TUC is holding a national demonstration -- March for the Alternative: jobs, growth, justice. This demonstration will be a major focus for opposition to Government spending cuts.
