As I drove past the columns of smoke near the massive Opal AB fire, my girlfriend and I noticed a whole new fire breaking out near Gibbons. We arrived just before fire crews did and called 911 as the blaze burned out of control into the tinder dry brush.

  • It must have been a loong 3 weeks! Thanks for all your efforts to fight this firestorm! I hope that all this snow helps reduce the fire risk this spring, but with how dry it has been in the past few years, the moisture could just go straight into the soil and water table.

  • Thanks, arn0ldaar0n. Yes, at least the forest will grow back at some point and be renewed. However, unfortunately the last couple of years, wildfires surrounding Edmonton in central Alberta, Canada are becoming part of a larger problem. The climate here has changed from relatively wet to fully arid and in the place of the forest only grasses and desert/prairie plant species may take root for the most part.
