H Nisar: Pak Elite Has Enslaved Nation

Hasan Nisar - highly regarded Pakistani analyst and columnist - describes the virtual enslavement of majority of population by the country's ruling elite since 1947. According to him, there is no reason for most citizenry to celebrate August 14th as Independence Day as it has yet to enjoy basic rights and dignity after more than 60 years of Partition of India. He urges people to either reconcile to their abject social and economic conditions or rise up against the corrupt and cruel governing system. This interview was recorded in August 2009.

I agree that the vast majority of Pak citizenry has yet to enjoy basic rights and dignity after more than 60 years of country's creation. We are ruled by a tiny, powerful, and indifferent elite whose whose primary concern is protection and expansion of its privileges. The cruelty and corruption of the governing system demands that people rise up in protest or else accept their abject conditions. Maybe the Taliban insurgency is a small social protest movement against widespread injustice?
