@robespierresbust Not to worry, the BBC are keeping a very close eye on them, making sure they don't copy their work. I don't know the Sherlock/Irene relationship well enough to make a fair judgement of it, but it's easy to tell it's something far more complex than romantic interest. The BBC are very protective of 'Sherlock', and so are the fans, so if Elementary DOES mess-up, they'll be onto them.

@EllenRebecca3 Hmm. But I think that if they get Irene right then the other characters will be right as well because she's the most difficult one; adaptations always suggesting that there are loving feelings between her and Sherlock. Tut tut. What a amateur mistake.
I think that someone should write them a letter saying not to stuff it up because some people are actually looking forward to it (i.e. me)

@EllenRebecca3 Yes yes. Although Sherlock Holmes was originally thought to be a very old-fashioned character before it was transformed into the modern Sherlock. So MAYBE it'll be okay... but it'll still really distress me that they might be all rootin' tootin' American. (Wow I want a Sherlock Western now. Ohh that'd be good!). And I'm still getting past my racist Americanisation-hating life so let's hope that I can be strong throughout the series.

@robespierresbust "I just hope that they keep all the flaws of the characters that made the originals believable and so darn good." You've hit the nail on the head - That's the exact thing I'm anxious for them to keep too, it's what makes chatacters interesting. They're not these superhero/god-like pretty faces drifting around, doing amazing things. I hope to god the women don't look like beauty queens with too much make-up and hair like they're fresh from the salon either.

@robespierresbust "I wonder if they're all going to have New York accents. That'd be odd I think" That's kind of the problem I have with it - don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with Americans, loads of them are interesting and cool - The thing is, it's the culture. No nation can copy another's culture, and Sherlock Holmes is very English.
-
@EllenRebecca3 Yes! Yes. I know that they got that other kid who played Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch to play Sherlock but let's hope that they don't make him too glamorous. And I wonder if they're all going to have New York accents. That'd be odd I think. I cannot imagine a Sherlock Holmes called Sherlock Holmes without a British accent. Or is it English?
Hmm I just hope that they keep all the flaws of the characters that made the originals believable and so darn good.

@robespierresbust "I only hope that they don't drag it out (like they did with the Office /sigh And the UK one was so good) and do stupid things to the stories. And if they make Irene Adler a love interest I will shoot someone" That's exactly the sort of things I'm worried about. The worse case scenario would be if they get pretty-pretty actors, make it soppier, tamper with the stories, and make the characters too wholesome or 'good to be true'.
-
@EllenRebecca3 Well I'm sure that he first needed John for financial reasons... he just never realised that he would become his one and only friend :,c
Oh? I'm excited for it because any modern Sherlock is good in my opinion. I only hope that they don't drag it out (like they did with the Office /sigh And the UK one was so good) and do stupid things to the stories. And if they make Irene Adler a love interest I will shoot someone. I'm pleased with how the BBC handled her.
-
@robespierresbust He needs John, otherwise he wouldn't have looked for a flatmate in the first place. I'm not sure if I'm going to watch Elementary, I'm too precious about BBC's Sherlock and I don't think they could do it as well.
-
@EllenRebecca3 But I just imagine that he feels so fulfilled by his work that he has no need for other people. ‘The Ice Man’ is a cool nickname though. Before I watched ASiB I thought it was from one of Gatiss’ characters in The League of Gentlemen.
Okay phew. I mean I like to think that I like Sherlock because of the intense plot and mysteries but really it’s mainly because the characters modernised versions of the original. Are you looking forward to the American ‘Elementary’?
