This is the big solo number (in Act II) for the Wazir of Police, the comedic villain from the musical "Kismet." The Wazir of Police has just decided to employ Hajj, whom he thinks to be a wizard, in hopes of gaining even more power. Overcome with his own brilliance, he launches into a recitation of his accomplishments, aided by his henchmen. This version is taken from a live community theater performance at the Genesius Guild of Hammond, Indiana.

"Kismet" is a musical with lyrics and musical adaptation (as well as some original music) by Robert Wright and George Forrest, adapted from the music of Alexander Borodin, and a book by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis, based on the 1911 play by Edward Knoblock. The story concerns a wily poet who talks his way out of trouble several times; meanwhile, his beautiful daughter meets and falls in love with the young Caliph. The Wazir is the classic comedic villain of the musical.

  • When was this production? We are producing the show in Escondido in Nov. 2011 and I'd love to know your experiences with this great musical

  • @Foxtrotter1880 : This production actually happened last February. I have to admit to you, it is a thoroughly difficult piece for any theatrical troupe to mount. The music is challenging, the acting can be a challenge (how to have fun with it without going too over the top on obvious caricatures) , and finding a way to make your set easy to shift yet believable for each setting can be a challenge -- rewarding if you pull it off. I can put you in touch with our director, if you wish.

  • Thanks for posting this!!!!! I was in the band for the show and couldn't see anything. Thanks again for posting!!!

  • We are discovering the challenges. Kismet was the first LP my family bought after purchasing our first record player in the early '60's, so it has a dear place in my heart. I'd love to know if you found any secrets to selling tickets to a public that for the most part does not know the show. I would also love to connect with your director. Please email me contact info at friedmad@aol.com. Thanks!
