Music has always played an important role in Jamal's life. Along with the strong foundation that his parents provided him, music helped Jamal avoid many of the temptations that can derail bright, young men from achieving their dreams. Today, Jamal is giving back to his community as an instrumental music teacher and band director at Camden's Creative Arts High School -- and it is paying off for his students. In October 2007, Jamal was awarded the "Oscar of teacher," a Milken Family Foundation's Educator Award and $25,000 prize. Jamal and his wife Ronsha are raising their four children in Camden and they are eagerly anticipating the birth of their fifth child.
