Mountain life was rough...and dangerous. Hol Rose was a prohibition officer who was searching Babe Burnette's farm without the legal warrants necessary. He was shot dead. This song is from "Ways That Are Dark" which is a concept album (released in 1997). The album was conceived and written by Daniel Gore to go with a 1913 book called "Our Southern Highlands", which documented early Appalachian mountain life. "Our Southern Highlands" was written by Horace Kephart and was taken from his diaries. Each song is from a chapter of his book.

Daniel Gore has guest musicians to help in this mountain music, bluegrass specialty album. You may find ways to purchase this album at http://www.elephantrock.com/waysThatAreDark/default.asp. This site has numerous notes, historical information about mountain culture of the early 1900's, complete liner notes, book references and there is even a phone number you can call if you don't like using the computer for information. The site itself is a great documentary site for researchers into mountain living and mountain lore.

Artists include:
Daniel Gore - mandolin
Peter Rowan - lead vocals, guitar
Tim O'Brien - lead vocals
Jim Watson - tenor vocal, lead vocal
Scott Huffman - vocals, lead vocals, baritone
Craig Smith - banjo
Rickie Simpkins - fiddle
Jack Lawrence - guitar
Tony Williamson - mandolin
Mary Miller - vocals, guitar, tenor vocal, lead vocal
Robbie Link - bowed bass, string bass
Milton Gore - lead guitar
Don Lewis - fiddle
Kevin Maul - steel guitar
Carl Jones - banjo
Russell Johnson - tenor vocal
and others

Words and arrangements of traditional songs by Daniel Gore. Most words and music solely by Daniel Gore.

Some song music by Daniel Gore, Milton Gore.

French Broad - (shape note song) - words and music by William Walker, arranged by Daniel Gore

I have tried to list as much detail about the artists as possible. This is a difficult album to notate. It is a song by song project, and each song has many people involved with the music and singing. This album is truly a one-of-a-kind and is also a treasury of mountain lore and facts. Daniel Gore dedicates this to not only his mother and father, but also to "the librarian everywhere"...where we find "sustenance and truth". Notes by Daniel Gore.
