Mandatory Flu Shots Hit Resistance

With the H1N1 pandemic spreading rapidly, hundreds of thousands of doctors, nurses, orderlies and other U.S. health-care workers for the first time are being required to get flu shots, drawing praise from many public-health authorities but condemnation from some employees, unions and other critics who object to mandatory vaccination.

One of the nation's most populous states, the country's largest hospital chain and the Washington area's biggest private health-care system are among those ordering influenza inoculation for health-care employees this year, along with a growing list of medical centers and clinics coast to coast.

The trend is being fueled by frustration at the stubbornly low proportion of health-care workers who get vaccinated each year despite years of coaxing, urging and incentives to do so voluntarily, combined with trepidation that the swine flu pandemic could overwhelm the health-care system, especially if many caregivers get sick, too.

Critics, however, say the decision to get vaccinated should remain individual, especially for the swine flu vaccine, which was rushed into production to try to blunt the pandemic's second wave.

"I don't want to be a guinea pig," said Orne Banks-Hopkins, 55, a clerical worker at Washington Hospital Center. "I don't think I should be forced to take something I don't want to take."

Some doctors and nurses in Britain have also expressed resistance to getting the swine flu vaccine. A survey of 1,500 British nurses conducted in August by the Nursing Times found that one-third would not get the vaccine because of safety concerns.

In the United States, the drive is fueling anti-government sentiment and rumors on the Internet and elsewhere that the vaccine may become compulsory for everyone.

"You start with health-care workers but then expand that umbrella to make it mandatory for everybody," said Lori Price of Citizens for Legitimate Government, a Bristol, Conn.-based group that opposes government expansion. "It's all part of an encroachment on our liberties."

  • all reputable experts say its important to get vaccinated.

good thing we are smart enough to know doctors dont know anything about medicine. Doing the opposite of what doctors tell you to do is always a sound medical decision.

  • No, brainlessly accepting an injection because someone with a white coat is always right, and knows better whats good for you, then you do for yourself. Thats because your stupid and cant rely on your own judgement, so just to be safe you take the magic potion. Also docters are superhumans with superbrains so the rest of the people are by definition intelligently subordinate, so dont bother questioning their words, your always wrong.

    Hows that for sarcastic bullshit?

  • If it comes to coding a computer program, i trust myself. If it comes to medical advice, i trust my doctor. If i think my doctor is lying, i get a second opinion.

I will never in a million years delude myself into thinking i somehow am capable of giving myself medical advice.

Doctors are no smarter than my mechanic... but when it comes to fixing my car, i trust my mechanic.. not my doctor. IF i think my mechanic is lying, i get a 2nd opinion.

  • You shouldnt presume this is about docters who lie.

Your mechanic, is a specialist in cars, he doesnt do tanks, airplanes, boats etc.

Your docter isnt a specialist, its his job to know about alot of different conditions so he can send people on to a specialist if necessary.

He's not a virologist, or involved with testing or producing of vaccines. The WHO and Big Pharma tell him what to know.

Dont question the dr's intentions, but dont delude yourself into thinking they got all the answers.

  • mechanics are general practitioners. If you have an exotic car they will refer you to a specialist. Nobody takes their Lamborghini to meineki for repairs.

Its just how it works... and as far as i know... not a single virologist has spoken out against the swine flu vaccine.

I think it boils down to trust in humanity, and i personally still believe people are generally good creatures. If i know nothing about a subject, im still willing to trust an expert.

  • "mechanics are general practitioners. If you have an exotic car they will refer you to a specialist. Nobody takes their Lamborghini to meineki for repairs."

You're stretching the analogy to an irrational point. I kinda know what your trying to say, but it just doesnt work like that.

"not a single virologist has spoken out against the swine flu vaccine."

Not swine flu particularly, but critical opposition from within the medical community has been present from the beginning.

  • "I think it boils down to trust in humanity"

Trust should not be taken for granted.

"i personally still believe people are generally good creatures."

I do to, but dont think for a second that people are intelligent by nature, its not a given,.. intelligence is shared.

Even when people wish well, they can still bring disaster in their ignorance. Even if they are considerably knowledgable. Ignorance is not about what you know, its about what you dont know.

  • FUCK! Eating your own fucking boogs works better as a "vaccination" than anything they're injecting you with.

  • @mark1m You and the rest of the sheeple first, mark. You'll be like the king's food taster for the rest of us. If you don't die, become sterile or anything else that might be a side effect, we'll all be so relieved and still won't take the shots. LMAO

  • O.M.F.G. H1N1 kills less people then the common flu! i have not and will not get ANY of those SHOTS. government, get the F**K off my back and go F**k your self obama!

  • "Just because something works doesn't mean it's safe."

What does she mean by, "works"? If it saves you from the flu, but causes another illness... is that still something that works?

By that logic famine works because it saves you from obesity.

If the objective of vaccination is protect your health, then this doctor's statement is evidence that vaccines do not work.

  • Why should forcing someone to take something they don't want make the population unsafe- it's not like you will be prevented from getting one if you want.

I am part of a group called the Phoenix Republic, a group dedicated to challenging the health care bill in court- we already have some number of members, and are looking for more so we can take the government to court.
