  • Godammit guys, there's the Classical pronunciation and the Ecclesiastical pronunciation. A lot of people use this pronunciation because it's more contemporary (the Vatican use it), but the Classical pronunciation is probably more like how the Romans spoke it.

Many prefer the Ecclesiastical way because it's much easier to learn the pronunciation through listening to fluent speakers speak it.

I prefer the Classical pronunciations (the 'k' sound) because it sounds more unique.

  • As far as I know, in my experience with North American Classics programs, this is the correct pronunciation. Yes, her vowel lengths are slightly different, but I suspect this as to do with her British accent. I'm not sure where you all have learned your Latin, but I have never heard 'c' pronounced ch- ever.

  • @gextvedde I was just wondering the same exact thing. Was this set up?

  • @Ade76 Plus the scholarly consensus is that in Latin it was indeed pronounced K. The ch is just an Italian adaptation to the norms of modern Italian.

  • @Ade76 As there aren't any native speakers of these languages, the prononciation isn't important. Plus people are only taught to read and write these languages, not to speak them. Every country has its own pronounciation conventions, based on their native language.

  • @Ade76 I take it you studied Latin in school. Everybody in Britain uses a standard pronounciation. Same with Greek. Of course it's wrong, but there are quite a few don't knows about the ancient pronounciation. Also by the way, the Italians do pronounce ce and ci as che and chi, but not all Romance languages do. The French for instance usually pronounce se and si; as for vowels, in both English and French all vowel sounds are approximated to their usual equivalents in those languages. Convention.

  • This said, she is a good teacher, it's just her pronunciation that needs improving...

  • And why the hell is it only in Britain that Latin is read like a kenta language and not a centum (Latin) language?

ce and ci are read like chicken and chaiir! It's like this all over the world, and no Romance language reads them k which is a German pronunciation, but even in Germany they read them right. Plus, she needs tro get her vowel lengths right!

  • Marcus Valerius, I wish she could read the name right

  • omg...Jamal...is so damned cute :D
