26th September 2008 - Police have recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested two men following a police pursuit through inner Sydney last night.

Shortly before 8pm, police attached to Marrickville, Ashfield, Leichhardt, Redfern and Newtown Local Area Commands were involved in a pursuit with a suspected stolen silver Subaru WRX.

The vehicle was believed to be connected with four recent armed robberies around the Sydney Metropolitan area and has been involved in two police pursuits over the past three days.

Strike Force Teale, which comprises officers from the Metropolitan Robbery Unit, was formed to investigate the offences.

The most recent occurred about 5:45pm yesterday, when it is alleged that three men entered a store on the Princess Highway, Blakehurst, and made demands for cash while threatening staff with machetes.

Police have been told that the three men jumped the counter and stolen the money from the cash register before exiting the store via the rear door and fleeing in a silver Subaru WRX. No customers were in the store at the time of the incident and nobody was injured.

The pursuit ended shortly after 8pm in Little Commodore Street, Newtown, where the three men abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

A perimeter was established and police from Marrickville, Leichhardt, Redfern and Newtown Local Area Commands, with the assistance of Polair and two police dog units, initiated a search for the three men.

About 10:20pm a 24-year-old Marrickville man was arrested in Alice Street, Newtown.

A short time later a 23-year-old Chippendale man was arrested in nearby Hawken Street.

The two men were both taken to Newtown Police Station for questioning by investigators attached to Strike Force Teale.

The 23-year-old Marrickville man was later charged with four counts of robbery whilst armed, take and drive conveyance and enter enclosed lands.

The 23-year-old Chippendale man was charged with robbery whilst armed, being carried in a conveyance and enter enclosed lands.

Both men have been refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court today.

The vehicle and its contents have been seized by police and will be subject to forensic investigations.
