Turkiye is eyeing it's greatest court case in history as the countdown has started for proceedings in the Ergenekon case. Ergenekon is the term given to the alleged plot to overthrow the government. So far, 86 people have been arrested in the case including a two retired general. Hearings begin tomorrow.//
Among the defendants are retired General Veli Kucuk, the leader of the Workers' Party, the chair person of a Nationalist Association called Kuvai Milliye and retired Colonel Mehmet Fikri Karadag,
The thousands of files which have been kept at Besiktas Court House where the interrogation has been conducted were loaded up on the back of a truck this morning under tight security.
Meanwhile, doctors of Ergenekon suspect retired Gen. Sener Eruygur, who was released from jail early in September after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage caused by a fall in prison, said his condition has improved. Eruygur was transferred to Gata Military Hospital from Kocaeli Hospital where he was operated on.
Neurosurgeon Savas Ceylan who operated on Eruygur said Kocaeli Hospital approved his transfer to Gata Military Hospital because his condition improved such that he could carry out his daily activities. MD Ceylan added he and Eruygur had a chat over a cup of tea a few days ago.
The Ergenekon case which will commence on Monday will be attended by 86 defendants among whom are retired generals, journalists and professors.
