After meeting Katie, an actress from Chicago, and discovering that she will be staying in Deadwood City for a while, an elated Wild Bill (Howard Keel) loudly professes his newfound love. Unfortunately for the painter who is trying to create her likeness, Wild Bill latches onto the poor old guy, and sings to the painting, keeping the artist from his work with some amusing lyrics.

Lyrics:

My heart is higher than a hawk,
My love is deeper than a well,
I'm thinkin' in a little while, my love an' I'll be doin' very well.

An owl is givin' me the eye,
The wind is blowin' me a kiss,
I wouldn't be at all surprised if I were only dreamin' all of this.

And when I strut about like a Sunny Jim,
Dressed in yeller and red,
Folks'll shout, "Take a look at him! He's pitched in the head...!"

I said that I would never fall,
I laughed at others when they fell,
And here... I'm falling...
Higher than a hawk...and deeper than a well...

And when... we're all rigged out like a birthday cake,
Eyes'll pop everywhere.
Folks'll shout, "Don't you think they make, a wonderful pair?"

I said that I would never fall,
But if you promise not to tell,
My love for you... is higher than a hawk,
And deeper than a well.

  • I want to pounce this hansom son of a gun<3

His voice it completely swoon-worthy and would woo any woman ="]

  • Used to have countless good natured arguments with my Dad over which was the best song from this musical. He went for 'Secret Love', which is undeniably great, but I always preferred this one.

Not many leading men combined looks, charisma, presence and talent the way Howard Keel did.

Just such a shame he didn't really start to establish himself in film musicals until the genre was on its way out.
