David Carroll's work in Chess and, of course, Grand Hotel, is amazing and I can only imagine the kind of work he would have kept turning out had he not left us way too soon.
@CVActor1 Thank you for the clarification on the history of David's recording. I was lucky to be a guest to see the final dress for the 1st national tour of GH. I love this show.
Actually, the bonus track of David singing Love Can't Happen was recorded at a cabaret benefit. He never got to record it in the studio. Very early in the recording session on the first day he excused himself to use the bathroom, where he suffered a pulmonary embolism and died. That's why Brett is on the album. It's a SHAME the writers' argument on rights for the score/album went on for 2 years - or we would have had David's performance to treasure on the recording!
I'm a friend of Tommy Tune. I saw Grand Hotel as his guest on Broadway many times, but never with Mr Carroll.which I regret,, only saw it with Brent Barret and Rex Smith.. on tour and in NY. I admire Barrett but would loved to have seen it with Carroll. I do have the original B'way CD..with the bonus track of Carroll singing "Love Can't Happen" in the studio, where I understand he died shortly after.
This is very special. Thanks for posting. He was a great talent and a wonderful human being. God, How I remember this.

Saw it. Saw him do it at the Martin Beck. He was a brilliant and tragic figure of the musical theatre. The voice. The personality. Irreplaceable.

@SweeneyTodd109 I believe the ballerina says something to the effect of "I have dance shoes older than you are"

Great video; wonderful singer! RIP, David Carroll.
By the way, does anyone know what the line at 2:05 is, and why it gets a laugh from the audience?
