@sirdelrio Actually the main reason Ian was crying at the end of his race was because at the Australian olympic trials in 2004 he fell off the blocks in the finals which meant he was DQed and wouldn't have a shot to swim it in Athens. Grant Hackett and another aussie named Craig Stevens ended up being the 2 Australians to swim the 400 in Athens. At the games, Craig Stevens gave up his spot in the finals to Ian Thorpe to swim in this race, he was thankful to have another chance, and he won

wat abt the other side?
The best stroke, if you want to see where ur competitors are, is the bilateral freestyle stroke.

The 400m free has always been his favorite race, he described in as something very emotional to him. Perhaps it was because of all the doubters - people were questioning his form because his charity work was interfering with his training

Does anybody know why was Ian crying at the end of the race? i mean, it's not like that was his first gold medal.

@Romleb11 well, to be precise is not allways the same side. in one direction is right, in the oposite direction is left. of course, is allways the side of his strongest oponent. if you are in lane 5 and you want to check on the guy in lane 4, in 1st 50m he would be on your right, but when you turn he is on your left. it's simple.

-
thorpe's style is al little anti asymmetric, he will engage the breath side hand more, so he will change side each 50 metres, this will only show in competition.

notice how he's always breathing at the same side no matter what direction he's going to see if the man next to him is ahead or behind
