The Mavromichalis Clan, leaders of the Maniates, & heroes of the Greek War of Independence

The instrumental song is NTOYNTOYK (duduk) produced by Greek legend Pantelis Thalassinos (Παντελής Θαλασσινός) and by Armenian musician, Vahan Galstian.

Mani (Μάνη) is a region of Morias (Μωριάς), what is known as the Peloponnesus (Πελοπόννησος), and it was part of the few lands that were never conquered by the Turks.

The Maniates (Μανιάτες), or Maniots as they are sometimes called, are descendants of the Spartans. The Mavromichalis (Μαυρομιχάλης) family was one of the prominent leaders of Mani, and they include Petros who was made Petrobey to rule the area after the Turks failed to conquer him, and also his brothers Kyrakoulis, Tzanis,Georgios and Konstantinos.

After the Turks were defeated and Greece won her independence, the Maniates did not wish to have a central leadership, and were responsible for assasinating Ioannis Kapodistrias (Ιωάννης Καποδίστριας), the post-revolution head of government.
