I, generally speaking, enjoyed this segment. I thought that the main theme could have started a little bit faster, but thats not a big deal. The accelerando was a little weird. He suddenly got got faster all of a sudden, instead of gradually building until the repeat. The tempo, according to Mahler, is supposed to gradually get "fresher", not all of a sudden shoot off.

It's a matter of taste, I suppose. I sort of like the "shock effect" of a slow build-up followed by a burst of energy. Of course, it may not be what Mahler intended, but I sort of like it.

Hey guess what? Maestro Dudamel conducted that same work with Los Angeles Philharmonic back in October 21, 2009 during inaugaral concert. in Los Angeles, CA as new music director.

Well I dunno.
Some musicians seem to have no idea what's going on through the director's mind.
Some others are less than happy with the director.
And the rest is just enjoying..

I'll say just wait and see what's up with him in a few years, but hey! I'm not a musician.

Which performance (orchestra and director) would you all be agreeable for the first time listening Mahler's Symphony No. 1?

I highly highly Lorin Maazel's most recent recording of Mahler 1. I agree with 99.9% of his interpretation. That's just my personal taste, but I take my Mahler very seriously. Too seriously one might say.

have you seen Rattle conducting? he does it more than this guy, but we all know Rattle is one of the most respected Mahler interpreter.
