  • Her Medea was incredible. Live in the theatre she was electrifying. I saw this 1959 Covent Garden Medea (having got up in the middle of the night to queue up for tickets) The vocal timbre, the phrasing, the breath control the interpretation, the drama of it all left one drained by the end. It may not have been as perfect vocally as the 1953 Scala recording but being there in the theatre and hearing it live was an unforgettable experience as all her other performances I was lucky enough to see.

  • thank you for this. As for a recording of her voice, I think none can beat the 1959 studio La Gioconda. Callas herself said that if anyone cared to understand what she was all about, they should listen to the last side of that recording. "It's all there," she said. And the quality of the sound is superior to just about any of her other recordings.

  • I personally find this, the 1959, Covent Garden Medea probably the best of all; admittedly, the voice is not the same as "53 with Gui, but I would not say she is "over the hill". I find Callas is in control of her voice, and very much so: the phrasing is as miraculous as ever, and there is no struggle in her singing, technically speaking. The voice has changed, surely, but not the singing nor the technique.

No argument intended in this posting, just my opinion.

  • The ROH 1959 MEDEA is quite good, but her voice sounds already over the hill and is really in ruins by the time we hear the 1961 Scala live recording. The 1958 Dallas performance is very good, arguably her last fearless vocal effort. For the pristine best of Callas as Medea please refer to the 1953 Florence (with Gui) and 1953 Scala (with Bernstein) captions, as both are excellent. She uses the voice unsparingly and obviously pays the price in later years, but oh my God what an immense artist!

  • @TheRealAngelHeart, I agree. Any Medea she sang is better than anyone else's Medea, but in Dallas, she was on fire!

  • The one you should definitely listen to is the 1958 Dallas Medea - that is perhaps her last "perfect" performance. Everything is well balnced and the cast is great with Berganza and Jon Vickers.

  • insuperabile
