This is a jelly that I've never seen here off our coast. I may be wrong on the identification but I'm pretty sure that this is a Mauve Stinger also known as simply a Purple Jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca). If in fact this is noctiluca then it has some very interesting facts behind it. According to a few articles on this animal, this is a bioluminescent species, meaning it is capable of generating light similar to a firefly.

These jellies can form large swarms of up to 600 individuals per square meter and in some places it's not uncommon to see these washed up on shore. Here in Southern California I'd guess that it's safe to say that they are fairly uncommon.

These are capable of delivering a painful sting so if you see these while out swimming in the water be careful to avoid touching them.

  • i saw to of those the othere day+ a white one

  • Where'd you see it?

  • Yes, Its a muave stinger. They have ruined dives for our diveshop in Mallorca several times...somedays theres thousands of them at the divesite. Some of them stings more and others less...but you get "burnmarks" after the ones that stings mouch! Greetings,Mallorca,Spain

  • In studying up on this I found videos that show thousands of these in the water. Pretty spectacular. Luckily for us this is pretty uncommon to see these in our water here in Southern California. The water has been very warm lately which I think brought them up from down south.
