The Shroud of Turin: sacred Christian relic or clever fake? If it was created, it must have been by someone with extraordinary skills. The evidence points to one man, one of the greatest geniuses who has ever lived. Was Leonardo da Vinci the man behind the Shroud of Turin?

Worshiped by millions as the authentic burial cloth of Jesus, the Shroud of Turin is one of the most sacred and controversial relics of the Christian world. The image of Christ, believers say, was burned into the cloth fibers by the intense heat of resurrection. Behind the Cathedral that holds the Shroud, the Library of Palazzo Reale contains the self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci.

What is the link between these two remarkable images?

This extraordinary film will weave together different threads of this puzzle. It explains the enormous significance of the Shroud, and the controversy over its authenticity that has raged in recent years following attempts at scientific study. And it asks the question: if it is a fake, who on earth would have had the ability to create it? - for the image on the Shroud is no ordinary painting.

Experts on the Shroud, on renaissance art, image analysis, forensic science, and crucifixion argue how this strange and mysterious image might have been created - or how it could not have been. Was it created photographically, in a camera obscura, was the image burnt on by pressing the cloth against a heated sculpture? Was it indeed painted, using a very sophisticated technique? Every method suggested points to the fact that the artist would have needed unique talents, and the film demonstrates that these talents were exhibited by one individual: Leonardo da Vinci - inventor, visionary, scientist, anatomist, artist and heretic.

Leonardo had not only the means to create the Shroud, he also had the motive. His was a life of facing challenges, of discovering the unknown, of pushing the boundaries... and of devising riddles and practical jokes. He also despised the excesses of the Catholic church - though he moved among the upper reaches of its hierarchy. Indeed, he was close to the Pope himself, through whom he was familiar with the Savoy royal family. And it was the Savoys who, significantly, owned the Shroud at the time a Papal blessing gave it its aura of authenticity.

Leonardo: The Man behind the Shroud, captures the wonder that the shroud holds, and the mastery of Leonardo.

  • We live in a world of hard pursuit of monetary wealth and position. If the shroud is authenticated it would negatively affect a very wealthy and powerful group of people. Never underestimate what a group of people will do to protect their monetary wealth and postiton. In the case of the shroud we are talking about billions of dollars that will flow in a different direction if authenticated. So, seeds of doubt have to be planted. Leonardo Divinchi as the artist works perfect, but not on me.

  • When Jesus was buried he was covered in 100 lbs of myrrh and aloes. That is enough to paint a house, over 10 gallons. Mryyh and aloes mixed together will make a 1st century film plate. The equivilant of having a 8 X 2 Cubit mirror covered in cellulose. The 3-D info on the image tells us the cloth was levetated from the body. A fact, not theory. At that moment exposed to light the cloth would then reflect the image around it and a image formed. That is exactly what we see on the Shroud

  • I am a independent researcher and artist. I have seen all Divinchi's work, duplicated his brush stroke, I have done VanGogh, Carvaggio, Botecelli, Michelangelo, Gainsborough, El Greco, no artist paints with liquid myrrh and in reverse color. Never in art history. Divinchi is a great painter, no one disputes that. But the image on the shroud is NOT PAINT. Myrrh also contains cellulose that when exposed to light forms a latent invisible image. It was used on early film plates to make photos.

  • The image on the shroud under micrscope is made up the carbohydrate formula C6 H10 O5, Myrrh is a liquid tree resin made up of C6 H10 O5. The image is not paint, but myrrh. That is a scientific fact, not my theory. I painted the Mona Lia and the Virgin on the Rocks over the course of a year. I have seen all his work. Divinchi never painted with liquid myrrh. It is clear when it goes on. Nicodemus painted 100lbs of myrhh and aloes on Jesus. Nicodemus is the artist. God provided the light

  • @GoodShepard007 I'm sorry, but that is just ridiculous. If it wasn't done by a man, then an animal did it? A pigeon perhaps? Watch the video, I watched it and it is quite convincing that it was da Vinci that made it.

  • The image on the shroud is made up of myrrh from 1st century Israel. Not paint and not done by a man. When you put 100lbs of myrrh and aloes on a 8 X 2 Cubit Burial Cloth it becomes a film plate. Myrrh when it dries becomes glossy and hard, light reflective and sensative. Myrrh and Aloes contain cellulose which when exposed to light it forms a latent invisible image in reverse color. "A drawing with light,a photograph". The odds the cloth is not Jesus is 1 in 282 billion. Better than DNA

  • You know what i have notices? Christianity seems to have tried to wipe out every other religion. In the bible the jews are killed about 3 times over. ANd if god makes everyone who there are, loves everyone. THEN why the fuck does the bible say you cant be gay? If he was so mighty then people wouldnt be gay, but no there are gay people and they are people, same in the eyes of everyone. Except christians because the bible says so. Pisses me off.

  • It is worthless to argue with the skeptics. Even if science prove that the shroud is from 1st century they will come with some other excuse .Not only that if christ himself come down to the world now, these people wont accept him , because these are people who just want to enjoy the life as their wish ... so anything which may make remember them about death and after life will make them mad so they will do anything possible to stop this . The believers can only pray for them, may God bless them

  • 7:02 priest has tiny head compared with other 2 standing behind!!

  • The using of a plate of glass with the figure drawn by mean of chiaroscuro technique as negative plate ( like do it the photographers during revealing process of any photo) would explain why the image looks so flat, burned and blurred and produces 3D pattern. This technique isn't so unusual if we consider that people used to place curtains in front of stained glass windows and there were a lot of sensitive substances to sunlight during Mid Age. Our curtains are "printed" by sunlight gradually.
