Austin, TX - Two top economic forecasters are making bold predictions about the Austin economy. The economic forecasts go beyond the "last in- first out" of the recession observation. What they see is a big change in the type of jobs coming to town, giving Austin an economic makeover.
Everyone passing by this front window is a potential customer. From inside her salon that's how Mary Ann Catena sees it. The central Austin hairstylist noticed business starting to pick up in late 2010.
"You could feel it coming and when the Christmas holidays came it was fantastic January came and went and there was a little slow down but then its coming back right up again," said Catena.
Because of the up tick, one of the few empty seats in the salon will soon be used by a new stylist. Mary Ann also is looking to hire two more employees. She is an example of the job growth predicted by economic guru Angelos Angelou.
"We are calling for 18,000 new jobs this year, about 25,000 new jobs next," said Angelou.
Angelou told business leaders at his annual forecast meeting Thursday morning the service industry will lead the way. Austin's traditional hi-tech industry has lost its job creation mo-jo and Angelou believes the slack will be picked up by industry selling-green technology and nailed down, by residential and commercial construction.
"Talk about a double dip recession is no longer valid," said Angelou.
