The Bronx Fatherhood Program is a service offered by Visiting Nurse Services of New York (VNSNY) which is one of 16 Fatherhood Initiative programs funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development. For more than a century, the Visiting Nurse Services of New York has provided compassionate and expert care to mothers and children throughout New York City. VNSNY services began in 1893 when the founder, Lillian Wald, provided care to a sick immigrant mother in the womans tenement apartment. Today, this organization offers an array of services from maternity, to newborn and pediatric programs, to Head Start and Fatherhood.
In this video, Channel 2 News captures the heart of the Bronx Fatherhood Program. News 2 interviewed a young father who is facing the challenging responsibilities of parenthood. The Fatherhood program provides support services to young fathers 16 24 years old such as Mr. Demetrius Ortiz, to help them reconnect and actively participate in the lives of their children. Program support services include: counseling, mediation & conflict resolution training, assistance arranging child visitation, GED and/or educational referrals, and help with job searches and placement.
