When a fiat currency fails, the number of pieces of silver in a community can be more important than the amount of silver important.

  • I agree. With what 1 oz of silver is likely to be worth (let alone an oz of gold!), smaller denominations of silver will be more practical "crisis currency" in the event of a currency collapse. There is also good reason to expect that copper pennies (pre-1982 in the US) will also have an enhanced perceived material value, when decoupled from the fiat currency system, and will provide "small change" in such an economy. =^[.]^=

  • Thanks for commenting. Pre 1982 pennies are an excellent idea.

  • Also note that you could melt the silver if you absolutely had to.

The melting temperature of silver is listed at about 1763°F, which can be achieved by focusing the sun's rays through a Fresnel lens of the right size and LPI. This means that even in a situation where the power grid is down you could still do this. Smaller is still generally better because you don't want to have to... but you could.
