Lebanon PA 10/9/2009: Lebanon City Police Chief Daniel J. Wright held a press conference to reveal the results of autopsies conducted on Melenie and Scott Hain at the Lehigh Valley Medical Center. Preliminary findings from the autopsy determined that Melenie Hain died as a result of trauma from several (6) gunshot wounds. Scott Hain died as a result of trauma from a single gunshot wound.

Investigation has revealed that Scott Hain shot and killed Melenie Hain in the kitchen of their home. He then went upstairs to the bedroom in their home and shot himself.

What is unique about this case is the way police were initially notified of the incident. Melenie Hain was engaged in a web-cam video call with a mutual friend of the family while she was in the kitchen. This friend was speaking with her for several minutes. At one point he was not looking directly at his computer and he heard what he believed to be a gunshot and a scream. He looked at his computer and observed Scott Hain walk into view and fire a handgun several times in the direction of where he last observed Melenie. He then called 911 who connected him to the Lebanon City Police. He observed nothing else on the web-cam session and the connection eventually terminated.

Patrol units from the LPD responded to the Hain residence and set up a perimeter. The Lebanon County Emergency Services Unit was contacted to respond and assist.
Neighbors were evacuated from homes in the area.
Attempts were made to make contact with anyone inside the Hain residence but they were unsuccessful. The ESU team made entry into the residence and discovered both Melenie and Scott Hain deceased.

Several weapons were located and confiscated. Police seized several handguns, a shotgun, two rifles and several hundred rounds of ammunition.

The case is being classified as a Homicide/Suicide and the investigation is continuing.
