I built an LED cube. It is controlled by an Atmel at90s2313, along with an 8-bit shift register.
Eight LEDs are light up at a time, for 1 millisecond, before switching to lighting up the next set of eight. I have used PORTB on the AVR to power the eight LEDs that are being light up, and I have used the shift register, along with some transistors to select which eight LEDs have their cathode connected to ground.
The software is written in C, compiled with avr-gcc.
