Over the past 9 years there have been 7 soft releases of Ara macao, at Tiskita Jungle Lodge, in the Southern Coast of Costa Rica, the following footage was made from our latest release in 2009, with Biologist Allan Taylor. All of the birds released are juveniles bred in captivity.
Prior to transport to the release site the birds are quarantined at the Breeding center for a minimum of one month, and tested for disease and general health. Once all permits and quarantine are complete then the birds are transported to the release site, in airplane, where they are collected by biologist and volunteers. As it is a soft release, the birds spend three months in the release aviary, in this time they are adapted and taught to eat all natural food, and familiarized to the surrounding habitat. Once all the birds are released they are identified and monitored by foot, by the biologist and volunteers, 365 days a year. To date sixty four Ara macao have been released at this site over 9 years, and 85% are confirmed to be surviving and thriving. In the past 4 years, there have been 16 wild fledged juveniles from 6 pairs.
Many thanks to all who help make this work possible.
