I think you're misunderstanding this younger generation (those under 30). Pop-culturally, there is no genre map. Pastiche is mainstream. That shirt is for the album Symbolic, by gosh, which kinda blows. (Human is the seminal Death work.)

Am I a total a-hole for surmising that this guy is kind of an American Cowboy Varese for Dummies? And the whole death metal/cowboyhat image is so transparent. "Oh wow, there are so many inconsistencies here! My little conservative classical music brain can't handle it!"
All that said, guy is talented. I just wish he'd not be afraid to present himself as the cool person he really is. Not the rebellious fuckwit he presents currently.
