Lovely Tanya fires a British 4.5 inch mortar attempting to hit a drum 100 yards downrange. Black powder charge is increased each shot until the candlepin bowling ball hits near the drum. Video production in cooperation with springfieldarsenal.com. DirectorProducerEditorPhotographer: John Morris

Weapon: Original British bronze 4.5 inch Coehorn mortar cast by Cornelius King in 1819.

Note that although not shown in the video, the mortar was properly serviced beteen shots, including wiping out with wet sponge, wet-cleaning vent, etc., and at least 15 minutes elapsed between shots.

No we use whatever the most appropriate powder is for the particular weapon and projectile, as long as it is safe.

I agree, we use the cannon fuze since it is cheap and readily available. In battle, I suspect quickmatch, or later friction primers would have been used to get more instantaneous ignition.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't have the first clue that it's not "Fire in the hole". It's "Fire in the hold!" and it's a shipping term for when fire brakes out in the hold of a ship (which was fairly common).
