Jimmy Webb did indeed said the song did not have deep meaning. Truth is he did not want to give 2 hour interviews of the meaning. Lyrics are to peculiar to think otherwise. The cake lyrics for example are from a poem . Why would he go the trouble of using that poem. Jimmy Webb is a deep person. He is now involved in classical music. Some people do not have the depth to appreciate this masterpiece done in four distinct sections. That is unheard in rock and roll. He is truly an amazing writer !

Well, not unheard of. Queen did a pretty fine job of that kind og thing... I think a lot of people can actually appreciate the complexity of the song, but I think appreciating and liking are too different things. For me its a bit melodramatic and pretentious. Although, that style was pretty popular at the time. I don't think anyone can doubt the enormous talent of Jimmy Webb He was only 21 when he wrote this, and wrote many amazing songs/poems. But this leaves me cold, sadly...
