2010 Latino State of the Union - MALDEF's 3rd Annual Roundtable on Law, Policy and Civil Rights

As we enter 2010, the Latino community continues to grow and increase its critical role in the further progress of our nation. The Census will surely demonstrate yet again that Latinos live in significant numbers in every region of our nation, working hard every day to improve our economy, our polity, and our society. We look forward to a decade of increased opportunity, including the shattering of more barriers like the one broken in 2009 with the seating of Justice Sonia Sotomayor. It is important that we assess the current state of our nation from the perspective of the Latino community.

Yesterday, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) hosted the 2010 Latino State of the Union: The 3rd Annual Roundtable on Law, Policy and Civil Rights at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

MALDEF President and General Counsel, Thomas A. Saenz was joined by U.S. Representatives Xavier Becerra and Luis Gutierrez; Joaquin Avila, Executive Director, National Voting Rights Initiative & Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, Seattle University School of Law; Dr. Gabriela Lemus, Director, Office of Public Engagement, U.S. Department of Labor; Mark Hugo Lopez, Associate Director, Pew Hispanic Center, Lillian Rodriguez-Lopez, President, Hispanic Federation and Chair, National Hispanic Leadership Agenda and Maria Cardona, CNN Commentator and Principal, Dewey Square Group in a discussion regarding the major policy initiatives facing the Latino community in 2010.

Over 300 community leaders, scholars and advocates were in attendance and contributed to the dialogue around Census 2010, comprehensive immigration reform, workforce development, health care reform, redistricting and universal broadband adoption.
