Part of an instructional how to video series by the Louisville KY construction experts at Clayborn Contractors Inc. This video shows the viewer how to layout a Common rafter with a framing square only. No complicated formulas to learn, and no calculators needed. By simply holding the desired roof angle on the framing square, the 12" horizontal dimension and the desired inch vertical dimension as shown in the video, the framing square automatically calculates the diagonal length component for you. You will not need a rafter table with this method. This is the easiest way to layout a common rafter.

The host of the video is our company President Clyde Clayborn. Clyde has over 40 years experience in Residential and Commercial Additions, Remodels, and Building Maintenance.

  • Thanks Mr. Clayborn, I just wish I could have stood over your shoulder to get a full view. I'm lefthanded and my instructor has inform me if I can't layout a common rafter. I will fail his class. My class is 3,000.00 dollars.

  • hi, ive seen lots of vids showing how to work out the lenght of a common on a 12/6 sloping roof but how do you work out the length on other sloping roofs? i.e, 12/9, 12/8 etc thankyou

  • Brilliant man, I'm just a little slow, I'll get it in time. Thank you sir!

  • great video the only improvement that would help me out 100% was if the video was at least partially taken looking over your shoulder so I could see exactly what you were doing instead of looking at the proceedure upside down. Thanks for the information .

  • Good Job on the Video ,
