i used to do this with my train set (no specific scale) first time it derailed, then i loosened the screw and it worked both ways. now the only thing surviving is a locomotive

How does it react when a train comes in facing the points instead of trailing?

It works as a normal switch. The train goes whichever way the switch is being held by the wheel weight, which may be mounted to either side.
