Jukwa is a small village near Cape Coast on the Ghanaian coast of the Atlantic Ocean. From Cape Coast it takes 20 minutes to drive to Jukwa. The population of Jukwa is approximately 4000 people and it is the seat of the Denkyira Kingdom. Farming is a major income generator for the region. Almost 90% of people in Jukwa are involving the farming industries, of which palm farming is a major activity. In fact, the production of palm and its conversion into oil is the primary way the farmers make their living in Jukwa.
Right now, most farmers in Jukwa produce their oils by hand using a simple machine. It costs lots of time and labor to produce oils in this way. After the production, farmers sell the oil to a soap factory or they package the oil into bottles and sell the cooking oil in the local market.
The whole process includes striping, boiling, cracking, and packaging and each batch/basket of oil takes about an hour to produce. Farmers in Jukwa don't have the concept of kilos, so usually they can't tell exactly how much the capacity they have, so they measure their production through the amount of baskets of oil they produce. The factories, depending on average produce about 10 baskets of oils to sell. Each basket can bring around 45 to 60 Cedis at the market or when sold to the factories.
