The village band from Tjaciv, Karpatho-Ukraine (called Técső in Hungarian, Tetch in Yiddish) play at the Fono Music House in Budapest. The musicians are Gypsies, Josika (bayan button accordion) and Yura (drum and plonka) Csernovics with Ivan Popovic, the fiddler. Missing here is the tsymbaly/cimbalom player,Misha, who was ill when this was recorded, and sadly, has since passed away. Yura plays plonka while drummig - it is a piece of negative film (originally birch bark) held between the gums and lips in the mouth, and blown as a reed. Técső is a majority Hutsul/Ruthenian village located just across the Tisza river from Romania, near the Hungarian border, and thus preserves a unique repetoire of all nationality's dance musics, including old Carpthian Jewish music.
Hey hilarious that's me playing bass with them. Not that you can hear it! That was an incredibly fun night at Fono, wow...thanks for putting up so many videos of them, those guys are so great.
