Great Expectorations with Leo "Spit" Gorcey

The legendary expectorating prowess of Leo "Spit" Gorcey is on display in this clip from "They Made Me A Criminal," where Leo engages no less a worthy opponent than John Garfield in a spitting contest! Although Leo's attempts at scene stealing with James Cagney earned him a cuff in the nose for his trouble from the "Angels With Dirty Faces" star, here Leo manages the amazing cinematic feat of spitting on Garfield's shoes and still remaining vertical and conscious! The premise of the film has Garfield on the lam as a fugitive puglist who encounters the Dead End Kids rusticating on a ranch in Arizona. "We got too hot in New York," explains Leo. In actuality, it was so hot on location during the shoot that the film stock purportedly melted in James Wong Howe's camera!

This scean was a piece of art...they worked together like .a well tuned rolls royce machine..thank God hollywood did not try and do a modern version of them..it would of failed big time...they are un replaceable....
