New Mexicans react to new Albuquerque immigration policy

tonight new mexicans are responding to mayor richard berry's change in policy to end the so-called "sanctuary city" status of albuquerque. the mayor says every person arrested in albuquerque will have their immigration status checked. antoinette antonio is live downtown -- with the controversy the policy is stirring up. antoinette? some people we talked to are worried this will turn into a crackdown on all illegal immigrants in albuquerque. but mayor richard berry assures us... it's only targeting those who commit crimes here. removing race from the equation. mayor richard berry says the city's new policy on checking immigration status for everyone arrested -- does just that. "i want everyone that walks through the door to be checked, regardless of nationality, regardless of what language they speak, regardless of the color of their skin. i want everyone to be checked." the mayor made the announcement at the new prisoner transport unit downtown -- where immigration and customs enforcement is getting it's own office. ice agents will fingerprint and interview suspects to determine their legal status. the immigration debate -- causing a bit of a divide for this albuquerque couple. "i do think it's a good thing because if you're here illegally and your not taking the right steps to come and cross the border then i think actions need to be taken." "i know people who happen to be an asset to the united states and they help our community and they bring growth to our community." but the mayor made it clear -- no witnesses or victims will be targeted by immigration agents. only those arrested for a crime. people say they hope that will be the case "you've the canadians coming from one side, mexicans from the other side, japanese from all over... i say just leave them alone." mayor berry says this program has been in the works for months -- and insists it is not in response to arizona's new immigration policy. immigration officials are handling the cost of running their office at the prisoner transport unit

@TheBasqueLand I'v got news for you the native Spanish speaking population of northern New Mexico find it highly offensive to be called Mexican. Moreover they are white and not part indian. The average New Mexico Spanish native don't want wetbacks coming into our country. And for that matter they have no affinity to Mexico.

For example Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated and the state Flag's colors are red and Yellow in honor of the Spanish flag not red white and green.

I dont call myself Spanish or white ( as you point out), I was talking about many New Mexicans that call themselves that, because they are in denial about where their roots really come from.... Mexico....

I know that ppl who are really Spanish are from Spain. I was just saying that people in Albuqerque are in denial about their real background....

@ClutchFan1971 Although I may agree with you, it's irrelevant. In 1914 a Congressional Hearing was held to settle if Italians were white. That lasted for over 2 weeks. Same thing with the Irish & some others in the 1920's.

The Constitution is the same today as it was over 230 years ago. Doesn't change (The Law of The Land). So the "policies" don't matter, only The Law of The Land is what matters.

And this county, city, or state stuff in this video are totally unlawful & illegal.
