My step-grandfather died two years ago. I remember him playing guitar and banjo just like this as I grew up. I used to think it "hillbilly music" or music for old people. But awhile back I discovered indie-folk and have since become enamored of these "social anthems" dating back to the English troubadours; a historical record unto themselves. As I listen to and learn to play songs like this I am reminded of the precious resource I neglected.

I was proud to call Fleming Brown my friend. He did one hell of a job to keep these old songs and the performers alive and noticed in the folk world. RIP Flem.

Proud to say I'm from Hobart's home town of Saltville, Virginia, the greatest place on Earth.
