Pier Luigi NERVI - (1957) - PALAZZETTO dello SPORT (ROMA - Italy)

Built for the 1960 Olympics, the "Palazzetto" is a small sports stadium in an innovative concrete dome. Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and Annibale Vitellozzi in the 1957 it hosted boxing among other sports during the Olympic Games. It is 194 feet in diameter and 69 feet high, seating 5000 spectators.The innovative dome is made of ribbed reinforced concrete. The lower half of the dome has continuous ribbon of window the whole way around the circular stadium, beneath the elegantly ribbed, white-painted concrete ceiling. A wonderful space. His work is in the tradition of nineteenth-century Masters of engineering for the insistence on the relationship between form and structure. The search of Nervi, in fact, was directed to identify the technological invention and the structural calculation, as well as economic, with the characteristics of the formal solution and the architectural composition, in according to his declared trust in the natural aesthetical expressiveness of a good constructive solution. This little stadium is in the former Olympic park towards the north of Rome, just near the Adutorium of Renzo Piano and the MAXXI Museum of Zaha Hadid in Piazza Apolladoro [] at the intersection of the Viale Tiziano and Viale P. De Coubertin.

Costruito per le Olimpiadi del 1960, il "Palazzetto" è un piccolo stadio sportivo costituita da una innovativa cupola in cemento armato. Disegnato da Pier Luigi Nervi e Annibale Vitellozzi nel 1957 esso ha ospitato gli incontri di Boxe durante i Giochi Olimpici. Il Palazzetto può ospitare 5000 spettatori a sedere ed è alto 21 metri con un diametro di 59 metri. L'innovativa cupola, è costituita da una sottile soletta in calcestruzzo armato rinforzata da coste. Nella parte più bassa della cupola è inserita una finestra a nastro che continua per tutta la circonferenza, l'intradosso della cupola è costituito dalle coste in cemento che si intrecciano elegantemente formando un cassettonato leggerissimo. Un spazio meraviglioso. La sua Opera si inserisce nella tradizione dei maestri dell'ingegneria ottocentesca per l'insistenza sul tema del rapporto forma e struttura. La ricerca di Nervi, infatti, fu volta a identificare l'invenzione tecnologica e il calcolo strutturale, nonché economico, con le caratteristiche della soluzione formale e delle composizione architettonica, secondo la sua dichiarata "fiducia nella naturale espressività estetica di una buona soluzione costruttiva". Questo piccolo stadio è ubicato vicino all'Auditorium Parco della Musica di Renzo Piano ed al MAXXI di Zaha Hadid in Piazza Apolladoro [] nell'intersezione tra Viale Tiziano ed il Viale P. De Coubertin.
