The Emmanuel Youth Empowerment Center (EYE-C) was founded in 2008 as a way to increase Emmanuel Centers outreach capacity, as well as address some of the under lying causes that lead children to a life on streets.
Most children and youth end up living on the streets because of lack of food at home, lack of education opportunities, drug addictions, abuse, unemployment, and poor self-esteem. For example, over 68% of Kenyan children do not attend secondary school due to the high cost, and 85% of Kenyans over 18 are unemployed.
The drop-in center provides such children and youth basic education and marketable skills. It provides basic counselling and meals, as well as opportunities to develop self-esteem and participate positively in the community.
EYE-C provides the following:
Computer training
Community library
Daily meals
Counseling services
HIV/AIDS education
Art and music opportunities
Recreational activities
We are grateful for the support of Afretech Aid Society, the Starbucks Innovation Fund and our friends around the world for helping us start the Empowerment Center.
We are doing similar projects in The Bahamas. We want to find a way to get youths involved in positive things. We also want to restore some of our Bahamian culture and history
