@90lysander I heard him live in Boris Godunov in 2008. His acting was brilliant...and I'm a tough audience. I also have a DVD of Ramey in Don Quichotte. The acting there is brilliant, also.

@arpeggio1358 Yeah, I'm not a huge Ramey fan in general ... gorgeous voice but as far as I'm concerned the acting leaves much to be desired; not much personality....

@90lysander I didn't find him staid at all. But each person's ear may hear something different. Julia Migenes is in deed a wonderful Lalume.

@arpeggio1358 I have that recording! Ramey sings beautifully (if a little staidly), and Hadley and Swenson make for a glorious pair of young lovers, but the show is STOLEN by Julia Migenes as Lalume. "Virtue is its own reward" indeed.

Ramey also recorded a Kismet CD in which he sang this role. It's the most beautiful version of Kisment i've ever heard. The voices are all absolutely gorgeous. Hadley sang the Caliph on the CD also and Ruth Ann Swenson was Marsinah.
