    This is perfection

Ella shows respect for the melody and sentiment, she glides effortlessly throughout maintaining the melancholy the song commands,

So many singers ruin this song by over egging it, there is a geat skill in keeping a lid on a song and Ella mastered this to a fine art. As she glides with the melody she maintains impeccable diction; her vowels dont widen and there is not the slightest trace of strain.

She makes it sound easy, but dont be fooled, this is a work of art.

there is a serious lack of talent nowadays from writers, musicians and vocalist this era simply can't be repeated there is no one to do it. Thank goodness for albums we still have gems like this one = )

Just beautiful...such sentiment topped with seemingly effortless singing...and gorgeous voice.

From what I have heard of modern "popular" music in the UK. it consists of endless thump-tish, thump-tish, thump-tish with a female screaming at the top of her voice or some male with throat problems. This noise is imposed in every shop, pub, cafe, builders merchant, yes, and even banks. So I try to avoid going to these places. Weatherspoons pubs have a policy of no music, and it is nice to hear people talking and laughing without them having to shout above a super imposed din.

Greatest version of this song. Induces an intense sadness and beauty simultaneously. Heartbreaking lyrics, flawless singing, excellent pacing and recording - a masterpiece in tragic music.

Maybe you're not listening to the right modern music.

I was part of a little jazz group in the mid to late 60s who performed in a pub in Stanford Dingley, Berks - I used to do a little jazz singing and the blind accordian player used to call out "Here comes Ella whenever I arrived" Ella was my idol so I was very proud of his greeting. Heard Ella for the first time years ago when she sang How High The Moon - nobody has ever topped her.
